Description
The abandoned isolation hospital in Comino, Malta, has a rich history. The British Military built the hospital during the 1890s to provide a place for people to quarantine after exposure to the plague at various Mediterranean ports. In the 1920s, the island of Comino was used to isolate people suffering from cholera, and this building housed many of them. During World War I, soldiers were treated here for injuries they sustained. Today, it stands completely empty and is only accessible if you choose to hike around Comino.
The building, made of traditional Maltese limestone, exhibits a weathered, yellowish hue, with signs of decay visible on the walls and windows.
The structure features arched windows and doorways, typical of Mediterranean architecture, though some of the arches are broken or filled in. Vegetation has begun to reclaim parts of the building, with bushes and small trees growing close to the walls and even sprouting from cracks in the stonework.
The sky above is a vivid blue, contrasting sharply with the dilapidated state of the hospital, highlighting its isolation. The ground around the building is barren, with patches of dirt and sparse, hardy plants struggling to survive in this environment.
This image evokes a sense of history and abandonment, with the hospital standing as a relic of the past, surrounded by the stark beauty of Comino's landscape.
I took this picture while on a group trek with friends in Malta. At the time, I wasn't aware of the building's history — only that it was quite stunning, being on a tiny island with a resident population of just two people!
