Description
The Order of Saint John built the Qalla I-Bajda Battery, located on the coast of Zebbug, Gozo, Malta, in the early 1700s. It was a coastal fortification meant to defend against attacks by the Ottomans and Barbarys. During World War II, it was turned into an observation post. Today the building is abandoned, but it remains quite prominent and visible on the northeastern Gozo coastline.
The walls are made of large, weathered limestone blocks, giving the building an ancient and rugged appearance. The doorway at the top of the stairs is arched, adding an architectural elegance to the otherwise austere military design.
The ground in front of the battery is barren, with a sandy or dusty surface, suggesting a dry environment. The sky above is a vibrant, clear blue, contrasting sharply with the earthy tones of the stone walls, highlighting the battery's strategic location for surveillance and defense.
This image of Qalla l-Bajda Battery encapsulates the historical and defensive significance of such structures in Malta, reflecting the island's rich military past and its strategic importance in the Mediterranean.
I took this picture while hiking through Gozo in June 2020.
